Dulce Nombre Parish complex
The new Dulce Nombre Church, whom competition has been called by the Diocese of Seville in 2017, replaces the original temple because of its degradation. Its design gives solutions to the liturgical functions, parish activities and brotherhood worships.
The complex is placed on two properties in Calle Caldereros in Bellavista area, one of the original church and the other of the building used by Caritas. This area is a working-class neighbourhood, which was born in the middle of the XX century to give a place to stay to the families of those people who worked close by, to build the Bajo Guadalquivir canal, also known as “the prisoners’ canal”.
The context is characterized by little houses and narrow streets. The facade reveals the expression and symbolism of religious worship. It shows a gold sheet covered bell tower prevailing on surrounding rooftops, fair-faced concrete and metallic colonnade. The front composition is classic, with base, shaft and capitol giving the building a symbolic and institutional character.
The entrance of the church is arranged passing through a holding point like, an open air yard where devotees can meet. After that, before the main nave, there is the nartex, which allows also to enter other functional areas of the building: the parish archive and the first floor.
The church is planned as a mystic royal church, following Luis Moya Blanco theory that establishes 3 categories for the Christian temples: the mystical, the royal and the communal. In mystical sets there is a strong light contrast between nave and the sanctuary and these characteristics fits with the typology of chapels. In royal churches, believers are in the nave at the foot of the altar, which is separated and elevated from the nave level of ground. The altar is isolated and this allows the worshipers to be nearer to Our Lady of Dulce Nombre, which names this establishment and influences the designed space. Nave roof structure and that the Virgin Mary is located in a gold display stand, focusing the attention which Our lady deserves, underlines the belongings to the mystic and the royal types of churches. Dulce Nombre Brotherhood resides in this parish and go on procession on Friday during Easter Week.
The right aisle, with a lower ceiling, is used as a penitential chapel, overseen by the Christ of the Health. This space provides especial privacy to pray and reflect. It constitutes a necessary seclusion space to receive the imparted penances. Over it, the choir is placed also as a transition to the Virgin Mary’s stand.
Following Christian tradition, the baptistery is an independent chapel isolated, located entering the nave, on the left side. It changes its configuration on Friday during the Holy week to let the Brotherhood to leave the church on procession.
Upstairs are designated to the Parish Centre itself, with rooms for administration, catechism and community meetings.
Zenithal light reflected on the altarpiece gold sheet giving to this temple the warm and vibrant atmosphere typical of baroque temples. This is, after all, a Sevillian church.
