Competition for the rehabilitation of the old food market
As saffron and turmeric season and give colour to food, this project colours and light up the ancient market Roquetas de Mar.
The latticework with arabesques lends a new identity to the building, connecting us with the past. It valorises its volume, which is clear and compact reinforcing the roof structure perception. The latticework filters sunlight and converts it in an integrated element of the interior space.
Relation with the context
The public character of the market makes it transcend its physic limits and flow into the city. The project has the forwardness of melting up with the city itself, becoming a point of reference within its context, capable of agglutinating the commercial activities of the area.
As a microcosm, traditional markets faithfully reflect the cities where they raise. Inside them, you can feel its people pulse, their peculiarity, essence, differences and their future vision.
This intervention project relates the new market with its surroundings, organised on the base of the analysis and compatibility of access and the foreseen pedestrian flux.
On Avenida Alicún, east side, the commercial character of the traditional market is preserved. The first sunrays of the daylight up this front as announcing that the market is open from early morning.
On the contrary, west façade has a ludic character thanks to the Gastrobar that takes place here. On the south, towards Norieta plaza, ancient access is preserved. Here, artisanal commerce stands are located, connecting the inside and the outside of the market to provide them with a more flexible open hours schedule. Goods supply and staff entrance is on the north side.
The concept of “market” is very similar to that one of “plaza”, an urban term that relates the building with the intention of constructing a piece of the city. Similar to other intervention in Roquetas, this project wants to recover the contiguous streets reorganizing their pavements.
The pedestrian area is redesigned and optimized, with wider platforms, where it is necessary, and a renewed parking for clients and staff. Thanks to this arrangement, visitors can enjoy an inside and an additional open-air part of the market where to hang out. This new configuration also allows the usual Thursday market, a traditional habit of our region, to be held, taking vantages from the new structure and complimenting its commercial activities.
