CEIP Los Arcos
Located on the southwestern edge of Malpartida de Cáceres, the project responds to its surroundings and program through sustainability throughout its entire life cycle. The building forms a large-scale filter that both separates and connects the adjacent urban environment with the natural setting, shaped by the randomness of granite outcrops and the patterns traced across the agricultural expanses that define the municipality.
For its placement, the entire length of the only urban boundary is occupied, with a longitudinal volumetric composition that creates a northern façade that is both imposing in its representation and domestic in scale, thanks to its height and the volumetric breakdown that adapts it to the existing surroundings.
On its opposite side, the southern façade features a pergola with a variable geometry and a total length of 130 meters, which extends and shades the most public areas, providing an unexpected intermediate space for the entire educational community. The short crosswise dimension of this “filter-building” allows uses and circulation to be organized from a single central vestibule along the urban boundary.
The conscious integration into its surroundings, its orientation, and the program to be developed—along with a firm commitment to improving comfort in public classrooms while minimizing resource use (radiant and cooling floors, natural cross ventilation, and photovoltaic supply)—have made this public school the first bioclimatic one in Extremadura.
